The Circuit of the Americas (COTA) was indeed first added to the FIA WEC calendar in 2013. At the time, the approximately 5.5-kilometer (3.4-mile) circuit was the sole FIA WEC venue in the United States.
The Circuit of the Americas (COTA), located in Austin, Texas, is one of the most celebrated motorsport venues in the world, known for hosting high-profile events such as the Formula 1 United States Grand Prix, MotoGP, and the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC).
Early development and construction
The idea for COTA was conceived in 2010, driven by the ambition to bring Formula 1 racing back to the United States. The track was designed by renowned motorsport architect Hermann Tilke, in collaboration with the investment group led by Red McCombs, a Texas businessman. Construction of the circuit began in 2011, and despite facing some
logistical and financial challenges, the project progressed swiftly.
The track was purpose-built to accommodate major international motorsport events and featured a layout inspired by some of the world’s most iconic corners, such as Silverstone’s Copse Corner, Suzuka’s Esses, and Nürburgring’s Bergwerk.
Opening and first Formula 1 race
The Circuit of the Americas officially opened in October 2012, just in time to host the first Formula 1 United States Grand Prix in five years. The inaugural race on November 18, 2012, marked a historic moment for both the circuit and American motorsport. The event saw Lewis Hamilton take victory with McLaren-Mercedes, while also bringing an electric atmosphere to the fans in attendance, eager for F1’s return to U.S. soil.
Growth and Popularity
Since its opening, COTA has hosted Formula 1 races annually, becoming one of the premier venues on the F1 calendar. Over the years, it has earned a reputation for its thrilling layout, featuring a mix of high-speed straights and technical corners that challenge even the most skilled drivers. The track's stunning elevation changes, especially the uphill Turn 1, have also become iconic features of the circuit.
MotoGP joined the calendar in 2013, further solidifying COTA’s position as a top-tier motorsport destination. The track has hosted several memorable races, with the MotoGP weekend becoming a major event for fans of two-wheeled racing.
In addition to F1 and MotoGP, COTA also embraced the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC), hosting endurance races that showcase the skills of manufacturers and drivers competing in the most demanding events in motorsport.
The Circuit’s Impact on Austin
COTA has had a significant impact on Austin and the broader Texas region. The event weekends attract tens of thousands of spectators from around the world, generating substantial economic benefits through tourism, hospitality, and related industries. Austin, known for its music, food, and culture, has become a hotspot for motorsport fans who come not only for the races but also to enjoy everything the city has to offer.
